[뉴스웍스=최안나기자]이탈리아 개헌에 국민들이 반대하면서 이를 주도한 마테오 렌치 총리가 결국 총리직 사퇴를 발표했다.  (Italian voters rejected constitutional changes backed by the government prompting Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to announce his resignation.)

렌치 총리는 개헌을 묻는 국민투표(referendum)를 실시했는데, 그의 패배로 이탈리아는 정치 경제적 불확실성이 커지게 됐다.(His defeat left Italy facing political and economic uncertainty.) 원래 이번 'referendum'은 상원의 권한을 축소하는 내용을 담은 의회 개혁안(constitution reform plan)이지만, 사실상 기성 정치권에 반대를 표할 수 있는 기회로 받아들여졌다(it was widely regarded as a chance to reject establishment politics).

오성운동이 주도하는 포퓰리스트 정당(populist parties headed by the Five Star Movement)들은 오랜 기간의 스태그플레이션, 그리고 아프리카에서 온 수만명의 이민자로 야기된 문제(years of economic stagnation, and the problems caused by tens of thousands of migrants arriving in Italy from Africa) 등을 부각하며 현 정권을 공격해왔다. 

특히 이들 야권은 유로존에 부정적인 입장을 표명해왔기 때문에 이번 투표 결과로 유로의 존립이 큰 위기에 놓이게 됐다.(The euro's survival is under increased threat following the political instability caused by the Italian referendum result.)
